Right from its inception in 1954, the Department of
Zoology has been recognized at National and International levels for its
outstanding contributions in various disciplines of Animal Physiology. All
members of the faculty have received advanced overseas training in their
respective research areas and established active research collaborations. In
due recognition of the research potential of the faculty and academic growth,
the department is being constantly supported with huge grants by several
funding agencies namely UGC (DRS Phase-I, II & III), COSIST, BSR, DSA,
DBT-BIF, DST-FIST with a total outlay of Rs.160 lakhs. In addition to the
above, the faculty members have received individual major research projects to
the tune of Rs.170 lakhs from various funding agencies such as UGC, CSIR, DST,
DRDO and ICMR. UGC awarded 30 BSR Fellowships for Meritorious students with a
worth of Rs. 3.0 crores for 5years. Other 30 students are working in the Dept
under various fellowships. Since its inception, 265 and 450 Research students
have been awarded with M. Phil and Ph. D. degrees respectively and published
2200 research papers in journals of National and International reputation
having high impact factor. The students of this department have good placement record
across the world. The department has established “District Environmental Center
(DEC)” under the auspices of “National Environmental Science Academy, New
Delhi” to create awareness on Management strategies of environment among the
public. The department has also a “Forum for Research Scholars” and “Zoological
Society” to organize invited lectures, debates, competitions, quiz programmes
etc. to enrich the academic environment in the department. Recently the
Research Centre for Neurological Disorders was started in the Department. The
department is offering other P.G., courses like M.Sc., Bioinformatics, M.Sc.,
Animal Biotechnology and by distance education M.Sc., Zoology programme.
